At 7am, their time, the team set out for the Summit of Mt Elbrus. The climb started from High Camp and across the upper portion of the Mikelchiran Glacier until the team reached the Saddle at 17,700 ft. The weather was perfect for climbing and some of the team actually commented on being too warm! Because of sunny skies, the team was able to take in incredible views of Russia from the summit. Today the team made their final ascent to the summit in memory of Teddy, forever 9 1/2. The team took Teddy’s monkey, that was always with him, to the very top of the mountain. Teddy was eight years old and in third grade when he was diagnosed with undifferentiated sarcoma in his chest. He endured 7 rounds of highly toxic chemotherapy, 2 life threatening operations, and 7 weeks of radiation. The surgeries removed all visible tumor but the chemotherapy was not able to kill all the cancer cells in his system. In less than a month after he finished treatment, new tumors were discovered in other areas of his chest. Teddy passed away early on the morning of August 16 just over 9 months after his initial diagnosis. One of Teddy’s most joyful times during his illness was the St Baldrick’s event at Osborn Hill School. He was the star, overseeing the first shavee of the night, his older brother John. He even felt comfortable to take off his hooded sweatshirt and bare his bald head as he felt he wasn’t alone in his baldness anymore. Thank you to the Gerber family for giving Climb for Five the honor to climb in Teddy’s memory.

After their time at the summit, the team started their trek back down the mountain, making a 40 minute stop at High Camp and then made their way down to Camp 1 at 12,300 ft. They were having dinner and getting ready to go to bed. The team is all tired after such a long and strenuous day but they were all doing well and were happy that they all made it to the top for the kids. Tomorrow the team will make their way down to base camp carrying the full weight of all their gear. Thank you all!

Today the team made the climb to High Camp at 15,200 ft with the rest of their gear. This is the last camp before the summit! The weather today was great for the climb to High Camp. The climb today was in honor of Justin. Justin was only three when he was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. Treatment and surgery took the sight from his left eye. After his second relapse, Justin started doing pushups “to get back to fitness so I can fight the cancer again,” he said. In March 2012, Justin relapsed for the fourth time. After finishing MIBG therapy in June 2012, scans showed no signs of cancer in his body. Justin’s family is in the process of determining his next course of preventative treatment now that his cancer has been destroyed. Justin loves corn dogs, mac n’ cheese, Cub Scouts, Legos and his dogs- Ralphie and Chipper. He is also known for his outfit of choice, a suit which he says is “smart looking, classy and sophisticated.” So today the team drew strength from Justin’s determination and unwillingness to give up. The team is all doing very well and they are all getting excited for the summit. It is now 11pm on Mt Elbrus and the team will be resting until 7am when they will set out on their journey to the summit at 17,700 ft. They should reach the summit by 1pm their time.

The results from the Mt Rainier drawing will be posted when the team makes the summit!

Today’s climb was in honor of Sarah. Sarah was 14 when she was diagnosed with Biphenotypic leukemia. She endured 20 months of chemotherapy. In 2008 after celebrating five years of remission, Sarah learned her leukemia had returned. She had a stem cell transplant and is currently fighting complications from her treatment and the adjustment of her new immune system to her body. But there is so much more to Sarah than cancer. She sings, craves Starbuck’s iced chai lattes, loves sunsets, and is a fan of everything Harry Potter. She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and loves their mascot, a panda. Today the team took a picture of Sarah’s panda at 15,200 ft. After a night of rest, the team will be making the move to High Camp at 15,200 ft. They will then make preparations for the Summit attempt. There isn’t much sleeping at 15,200 ft but hopefully they will get some rest and and the weather will stay clear. Thank you for checking in on the Climb for Five team. Tomorrow, September 1st marks the beginning of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month so start spreading the word!

One of the tents was broken so this means that instead of two men in each of the three tents, there are three men in two tents. At least they will keep warm. They are getting plenty of time to get to know each other as it has been a long day of sitting in close quarters without even a deck of cards. They are all eating and doing well though and sounded in good spirits. Tomorrow the team was supposed to climb back down to the cache to retrieve their stored gear but the forecast doesn’t look like it will happen. They have weather days built into the climb time to afford these setbacks. Thank you for the continued support of the team, it means so much to them! And thank you so much to the 5 Ambassador kids for your messages! The team was very excited to hear from you all. They are climbing for you and all the children like you!

The team completed the trip up to the cache and back down to base camp. It was exhausting and very steep but they were in good spirits and took video for Emily. When they arrived back down to base camp they decided to take a swim in one of the natural spring pools. Of course the water was freezing and they all had quite the shock! They washed some of their clothing and had dinner. Last night was a rough night with wind and rain but the team had all their gear packed up and ready to go. It is just after 9am on Wednesday on the mountain and the team is setting off for Camp 1 at 12,300 ft. They will be moving out of the high grasslands, into the alpine zone, and then on to the jumbled rock moraine alongside the Mikelchiran Glacier. Here they will set up camp. Today’s climb is in honor of Austin. Austin was diagnosed with bilateral Wilms tumor, a tumor of the kidney, in July 2007 at ten months old. After eight months of chemotherapy and four abdominal surgeries, Austin was declared cancer free. But the following winter, his cancer returned. Austin then endured more chemo, more radiation, and more surgeries. Today Austin remains cancer free, and although he will one day need a transplant, his kidney is currently working. Austin has lost his entire right kidney, half of his left kidney, and his hair many times. But he has kept his courage, energy, determination, sense of humor, and joy and that is what the team will draw from today.
You can also read updates from Seth and JJ, the RMI guides at www.rmiguides.com under the blog section. Here is a quote from today. “Our group is 100% healthy and strong and everyone is having fun”. Great news!
